Engagement and wedding traditions in Russia are much simpler than those in America and Western Europe. In fact in Russia the process of engagement does not exist. As a rule, a man asks a woman if she will marry him and that’s it. No engagement ring, no diamonds, no any extra fuss. Most of weddings are usually planned quite quickly, within one-three months. The Russian wedding planning is quite simple: dress for the bride, suit for the groom, rings, transportation and reception. No official invitations, flower girls, dressed for bridesmaids, church decorations like in Western cultures. The wedding rings should be bought by the groom. The rings for both the groom and bride look absolutely identical. These are plain gold bands without any stones. In Russia the wedding rings are worn on the right hand. When it comes to the wedding dress, Russian women prefer only white color. The reception is usually held in the restaurant. In the past, the party was paid by the bride’s parents. Today couple’s families share the expenses.
